Things to Do in Budapest

Feb 18, 2012 12:45

We are working on an itinerary and we're trying to figure out which sights to include. Those listed below are the possibilities. We will be there for almost 4 full days. We probably will not get to see everything, so we're trying to pick out which will be the most interesting for us.

Any thoughts on which sights not to miss and which ones we could ( Read more... )

I can't help with what to see in Budapest since the closest I got to seeing it was driving through. But if you have time I suggest taking a train down to Szentendre, I think it's about half an hour away from Budapest and fairly cheap to get to. I thought it was a beautiful town on the coast of the Danube, despite it raining the entire time I was there (in the middle of summer). Anyway, it has a Marzipan Museum which was fairly interesting, and a number of art galleries, Skanzen Open Air Museum isn't far from the town either. That was an interesting place to visit and I wish I'd had more time to look around.

I hope that helps and that you enjoy your trip :)

I would also add a "yes" for Szentendre - Orthodox churches interesting(with icon museum if you'tr interested in that and windy streets to walk around). Kovacs museum had interesting sculptures.

However so much to see in Budapest - we only got to Szentendre on a subsequent visit!

Hi, I live in Budapest. Most of those things won't take that long but (if the weather is nice) Margaret Island is fun to stroll around but there isn't much to see there. The same goes for City Park. I spend a lot of nice weather days in both those places, but they're more for relaxing. Vajdahunyad Castle isn't really a castle, it's located in City Park but it's still interesting to see and is more like a facade. I think you've mentioned you have a daughter before? but there is a zoo located in City Park that's pretty interesting - the architecture is stunning. Szechenyi Baths are also located in City Park, and are totally worth a couple hours to relax in the baths - but be warned, that hot water will take it out of you! You'll want to eat and sleep straight afterwards so maybe it's best to do this as the last thing of the day ( ... )

Agreed - you MUST go to Gellert Hill. One of best views in Europe and Skull church at the bottom!

Also, if you are able to get a baby sitter, you could see the Opera House by attending an opera - seats can be very cheap!!!

Also Rudas Baths as a n alternative to Szechenyi, as it is smaller but atmospheric??

I will look into those baths. The ony reason I chose the other is because they area not nude and we can all be together. It seems like the other two were either segregated or nude...

Rudas are mixed on saturday and Sunday http://www.budapestgyogyfurdoi.hu/en/rudas/history We went as a couple and enjoyed them. One advantage is that smaller and easier to negotiate.

But what are your special favourite things to do? eg If you particularly like sculpture you might try the Imre Varga Museum or , if you are interested in Roman ruins, there is an amphitheatre and then a Roman baths under a small flyover!!!

We like to do a variety of things...we typically like to see art museums, church's and cathedrals, any kind of palace or castle, parks, squares, and anything tht makes a city stand out, so really just a little of everything. I have no heard of the Roman ruins or the sculpture museum so I will definitely look those up!
