You could contact the tourism office of the nearest ski resort for quotes. Summers are really slow in those villages and the hotels, B&B's and private room rental is at a fraction of what they charge in winter.
Personally, I'd probably split the stay up a bit. 11-14 days in Salzburg sound like a lot. But then, I usually do the opposite - spending most of my stay in the mountains and doing Salzburg as a day trip :)
When going to see the ice caves and salt mines, you could also have a look at Festung Hohenwerfen, if that interests you.
Not really sure - I've never stayed in an B&B! For hostels I tend to budget around $30(Cdn)/£20 per night, but I expect in the summer prices might go up a little. But that's because I stay in hostels. Would the ski resort thing be viable for someone who doesn't drive? I'm completely reliant on public transportation as I've never gone to get a driver's licence

All the ski resorts can be accessed by bus, they are working villages after all and people need to be able to get in and out. Only, busses might go every hour or so in summers instead of every ten minutes during winter. The entire region of the 'Sportwelt Amade' is absolutely beautiful and any of teh places you go will have good hiking trails both in the valley and up on the mountains

I have to say: I LOVE you for being so helpful! It's nice to hear personal experiences because it's how you learn about a lot of things!
I hadn't realy started looking at getting to the Liechsteinklamm yet as I figured I could do it as a day-trip... but now I've got a lot to look at/think about! Until your responses I totally never considered that staying out in the mountains as being cheaper in the summer than the winter... whole new possibilities!
OMG, HALSTATT. I was only in Halstatt for a few hours, and honestly, I wish I could have stayed there for a lot longer. I actually visited it along with a few of the other little cities in the lake district (Mondsee and St. Wolgang were the others) in one day. Hands down the most beautiful place I've ever visited. I would say it would be worth the extra money for that reason alone. However, it's a really easy day-trip if you want to save the cash.
Just from your description... I'd probably kick my own butt for not staying at least a night in the area then! I'll just have to find some affordable accommodation! Were you driving or using public transit? I'm reliant on public transit but I tend to really like being in smaller places.
I hadn't really considered couch-surfing. I think it's a neat concept but I'm not sure it's the best option for a female travelling solo who doesn't speak the language. It WOULD be lovely to try at some point in my life though.
Fair enough, but I can tell you I've hosted two women traveling by themselves who didn't speak the language of the country we were in (I live in Lithuania) but we got on well enough in English.
I do understand your trepidation, but it can be something to consider.
Yeah, I think it's something I'd like to do at some point. I'm just not sure if I'm quite ready for that. Although from what I've read Salzburg sounds like a prety safe area.
