Madrid, Budapest, Vienna, and Middle Rhine

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions on my last post! I think we've found a possible itinerary. We're still not 100% sure that we're going to do this but we are looking seriously into it, and we are getting more and more excited about the possibility of really doing it. We are looking at going early to mid-May 2012 and we will be taking our ( Read more... )

You could probably make Budapest your home base and buzz to Vienna for the day or two. It's a small city so there isn't much to see (in my opinion). And you can also buzz up to Bratislava as well. Both are about 3 hour train rides from BP. There is nothing to see in Bratislava so a day there is MORE than enough (if you're interested in course). Buuut with kids in tow, maybe that would be a bit hectic.

Anyway, I live in BP so if you need any help, please let me know. :)

I lived in Vienna for 6 months and love the place... When I was there I rented an apartment from these people - http://www.appartement-philadelphia.at/home.php?p_id=186&l_id=en
The apartments are well designed, quiet but close to the city centre and the landlady, Christine, is an absolute sweetheart. Highly recommend them. And I don't believe you can ever get tired of Vienna!

When I was in Madrid the main place that I enjoyed was one of the parks. I can't remember the name but it is one of the bigger ones downtown. It is just a few blocks from the Reina Sofia.

I would strongly suggest going to Toledo. It is beautiful. However, you might want to get a guide for that since the town is practically a labyrinth. I just took a look at the street map that I got when I was there and I am fairly certain I would be hopelessly lost. Plus, a guide would be able to take you to the best places.

I'd recommend staying in Koblenz when visiting the Middle Rhine region and then take a boat trip to the variuos castles along the river Rhine. It'd probably be easier to get to the wineries along the Mosel from there as well.
If you want to stay in a castle hotel, you might want to check the hostel in Koblenz out, which is located in a former fortress. (http://www.diejugendherbergen.de/die-jugendherbergen-auf-einen-blick/koblenz/angebote-und-programme). It was newly renovated this year and two nights in a family room with ensuite cost 66€ (breakfast and diner included) and children younger than three don't have to pay anything.

As for budget airlines, both Germanwings and Air Berlin fly from Vienna to Cologne/Bonn airport, from which you can take a direct train to Koblenz.

If you have more questions about the Middle Rhine region, feel free to ask :)

Thanks for the info! Boppard was also suggested to us, but it seems that Koblenz might be bigger. And isn't it a little closer to Frankfurt than Boppard?

I did not think to fly from Vienna to Cologne/Bonn. Do you think it would be cheaper than flying into Frankfurt? The other option was to take an overnight train, but it seemed like it was more expensive to do that than to fly...any thoughts or suggestions on that?

One more question...Cologne looks like a neat city. Is it possible to do a daytrip to Cologne from Koblenz or Boppard, depending on where we stay?
