My friend and i have just booked to arrive in Athens, Greece in the afternoon of the 19th of September. We only want to stay in Athens for one full day and then are planning on going to probably 3 islands. In Athens we're hoping to find a safe, cheap hostel in a good area as we will be two eighteen year old girls. Would love any suggestions ( Read more... )

My husband and I stayed at this place: http://greece-athens.com/hotels/syntagma/myrto/ (we booked through hostelworld at the time, but it doesn't seem to be on there any longer 0_o), that I'd easily recommend. It wasn't a high-class fancy joint, but it was cheap, clean, just a few mins walk from Syntagma, with decent breakfast buffet every morning, and the guy running it was very nice, and gave us good suggestions & info when we asked.

But, have you been to Athens before? One day is not remotely enough time to see it, you will barely make a dent in that time...

My boyfriend and I stayed in Hotel Fivos (found through Hostelworld) in Monastiraki. The staff were pleasant, our room was quite clean, breakfast was good, and it was relatively quiet. It's right in the middle of the more touristy and exciting parts of the city (Syntagma and Monastiraki), and is a stone's throw from the subway station. We were really happy with our location, as everything good seemed within walking distance! The furthest thing away was the National Archaeological Museum - a 20min walk.

I agree with the above comment - Athens in a day is tough! You'll be exhausted by walking up the Acropolis alone. Good luck!

I live in Athens right now, but have visited a number of times before, and I always stay in Athens Backpackers. It's near the Akropoli metro stop and is quite convenient to everything. I would seriously recommend staying in Athens for longer, however. Mykonos and Santorini are lovely and should be less touristy by September, but Athens has so much to offer. You can do a day trip to Aegina from Athens, too, which is also quite nice. Or a day trip to Sounion.

As far as ferries, I took Hellenic Seaways down to Mykonos in April and found that a "deck" ticket literally meant just that - no seat, just standing on the deck for 6 hours (luckily I found a seat in a hallway). This is different from other ferry lines and I don't recommend it. On the way back from Mykonos, I got a ticket from Blue Star ferries, a "deck" class ticket, and that allowed seating anywhere inside or outside the boat.

Let me know if you have other questions!

I was in Athens about 2 weeks ago! I stayed at Hostel Pella-Inn (booked through hostelworld) and it is really close to the Acropolis and Monastiraki metro station. At night you have an amazing view of the Acropolis al light up!

I'd also recommend Athens Backpackers.

Great location and a good hostel! I agree that one day in Athens won't be enough time to see all the sights, but if I had to choose between a few extra days in Athens or a few extra days on the islands, I'd choose the islands. Santorini especially, it's beautiful.

As for another island, I loved Ios, but it's pretty much just a party island. There didn't seem much else to do there.
