First trip to Europe

Hello folks.

I've been tossing around the idea of going to Europe this summer and am finally at a stage where I would like to book the flight. There is to be a large gathering of a bunch of people I've known on the internet forever (and have met a few before) in Amsterdam on the 12th-15th of August. Regarding Amsterdam - there are a number of hostels which advertise specifically on being smoke and drug free so you should have no trouble there.

As far as a phone is concerned are you really planning on making or receiving that many calls? You're not going to be gone long and everywhere you're going will have Internet cafes so if your phone is wifi enabled that will be fine or just get yourself a skype account to keep in contact back home.

A good one that is smoke/drug-free (and alcohol-free) is Shelter Jordan (and I think Shelter has a downtown location too, but I stayed at the Jordan one). It isn't co-ed (it has separate male and female floors), but it was nice, clean and really welcoming, with a nice common area too. It's a Christian hostel, but I'm not Christian, and I still found it a great place to stay. One of my favourite hostels in Europe, and I've stayed in a lot of them.

(This is in Amsterdam. Forgot to mention that, oops.)

I went to Gothenberg last year for a couple of days. It's a nice place for mooching around looking at buildings, even if you're not into shopping.

My reason for visiting was the Aeroseum, but I am a big plane geek. There's also a Volvo museum...

Friends have stayed in the countryside near Gothenberg and report that it's very pretty.
