Luggage on budget airlines

Apr 25, 2010 16:36

I'm doing a bit of travelling this summer from the UK. Nothing really long, just 10-12 days, Amsterdam-Copenhagen-Stockholm with maybe a day in Hamburg or Bremen to break up the train journey from Amsterdam-Copenhagen. I plan on flying into Amsterdam on Easyjet, and out of Stockholm on Ryanair... what I really want to know is it really worth ( Read more... )

Well, when I flew to Dublin, Ireland on Aer Lingus in October, they had this deal where ur seats were free but to check ur baggage, u had to pay 30 euros per person. Ryanair had another deal, but it was more expensive than Aer Lingus' deal. So we decided to just bring our luggage on board w/ us.

However, I'm sorry but I don't remember Aer Lingus' regulations on luggage on board.

BTW, have fun on ur trip :)!!!

Looks like Aer Lingus has the standard 55cm x 40cm x 20cm limits for their carry-on, and under 10kg.

Ryanair tend to be excruciatingly strict on luggage weight. Not sure how strict they are on luggage size, but I had experience of paying for just 2 extra kg.

Weight shouldn't be a problem - when I traveled this summer the heaviest my pack weighed (that I know of) was 18kg, and that was at the end of my trip, with all my souvenirs including a gigantic table cloth for my mom, a pound of chocolate and 1.5L of whiskey. Ryanair's carry-on limit is 10kg, I think, right? I think (hope!) I can keep my bag under that, as the bag itself doesn't weigh a lot.

Ryanair are the worst! If you have a carry-on and a small over-the-shoulder wallet-sized purse (or even a bag from the airport gift shop), they won't let you on board until you only have ONE carry-on by putting the purse inside your carry-on. So on that note, if your bag doesn't fit their restrictions then it's better to check your luggage (and they are pricey!!). They are very strict!

Easyjet are pretty nice. I took on my carry-on and a small purse, and they were fine. As long as you meet their measurements, etc, you should have no problem with them.

Thanks so much for this question! It has been bothering me a lot for a while, since the budget airlines seem to charge (sometimes) almost as much for checked in luggage as for a ticket!

That's why I asked it... its going to almost double my plane tickets from 34 GBP to 65 GBP! I really don't get it... when we flew from Munich there was a woman with a full-sized (like, 70cm) suit case, a carry-all larger than the carry-on backpack I had, and several plastic grocery bags, and no one said a word to her... and there were several people clearly backpacking with bags larger than the one I have now plus a smaller day-pack... It was ridiculous!

EasyJet were pretty strict when I flew with them about a month ago but the flight was absolutely full and I think that often makes the difference.

Honestly it is a risk that is up to you to take. Sure, sometimes people get away with larger packs... but that's not to say YOU will. There's no hard and fast rule and it changes according to the mood of the day, the person checking you in, how full the flight is, how big your bag appears to be etc etc. If you can shove the bag into the test bin at the counters then you'll be fine. EasyJet have no weight limit. I've never had Ryanair weigh my carry on bag. But I have definitely seen people on both being forced to check in bags that were deemed too big.
