Hostels in Edinburgh?

I'm an American college student studying abroad for the entire school year in London. Me and at least three of my other (American) friends also studying abroad in London for the year are considering a last-minute excursion to Edinburgh. Out of us, I'm the only one who's been before, and I stayed there with my family as part of a larger UK road trip ( Read more... )

When I was there in February, I stayed at Budget Backpackers. It was nice - good rooms, good lockers, etc. A few minutes' walk from the Royal Mile, and just around the corner from Greyfriars Kirkyard. There's also a sci-fi/fantasy bookshop across the street, and lots of places to eat nearby (though unless they're pubs, they might close at 5pm - most of Edinburgh does).

Hostelworld is usually a good bet for getting reviews. You don't have to book through them (usually cheaper to book direct with the hostel's site) but I've yet to be seriously steered wrong.

As for hostels, I stayed at the High Street Hostel and I loved it.

If you're ever there in the summer, I highly recommend staying here:

They rent out the dorm rooms over the holidays. It's cheap (when we stayed there in 2006, rooms were something like $20 a night--looks like it's more now, but not bad), you get your own private bathroom, and free all-you-can-eat breakfast in the mornings. (We still miss the breakfast.)

Have a great time! Edinburgh is awesome.

while there in April, I stayed at St Christopher's. it was right near Waverley Station, and about a two minute walk (less maybe) from the Royal Mile. it is known for being more of a party hostel, but i was there on my own and didn't mind too much. i had some drunken/excited Welsh women there on a hen night, but once they left - the room was quiet enough. everywhere's clean and nicely painted, and it wasn't too pricey. have a wonderful time! i can't wait to get back to Scotland myself.

I stayed at High Street Hostel last weekend, which has a great location but I am still finding bed bug bites, so I don't recommend it.
