It's not retcon; it's the "history lessons" that are included in the DVDs... I explained it a little bit below. XD

GEASS HISTORY:

- America lost the Revolutionary War and stayed British.
- Britain lost the Battle of Trafalgar and Napoleon invaded Britain. The monarchy fled to America, where they made a capital on the east coast. (As far as I can tell, this is a legit counterfactual -- the American Revolution was a cause for a shake-up in the British military-industrial machine, so it's interesting to say "if that hadn't happened, the Napoleonic Wars might have been different." Also, I think this happened in Portugal but I can't remember.)
- Britannia (now based out of America) went on to do a lot of the things that America did -- opening Japan with the Black Ships, for instance.
