Ira's school has a gift room every year where the kids can buy cheap little trinkets and they have had a no santa/religious anything from any religion rule for 27 years. This year a few parents are pissed and went to the media saying "OMG! The evil principal is destroying CHRISTMAS because a few kids don't celebrate it- those kids should suck it up ( Read more... )

That's Ira's school? I think I saw something about that on Yahoo news yesterday. I'm sorry you have to deal with the drama. The rule seems perfectly reasonable to me (but, then again, I don't do Christmas, so I'm a bit biased).

Was it the school or the PTO/PTA that puts this on, and is it during the school day? Not that either one of those things should lead to making this anything other than a non-demonational event, but jeez, I'd be really suprised if this was ever held again after this year.

And I hope she doesn't back down either

Wait - it's the PTO, a parent-run organization, doing this and the PRINCIPAL got a death threat? Oh what the freaking hell!

If there is any way I can send support to the principal, let me know. What they are already doing is a way to allow kids who celebrate Christmas to have Christmas at their school without actually forcing the kids who don't to celebrate a religious holiday.

Honestly, I think the two appropriate reactions on the part of the principal should be to shut the whole thing down or to put in items from all the religions and practices celebrated by children at the school. You know, menorahs and dreidels and Darwin car thingies and such.
