I don't know anything about DVD recorders, but my father recently bought one. I can ask him which brand he bought and how he likes it if you want. :)

I didn't even know there were devices where you could plug a vcr into something and record it to dvd. Do they have the equivalent for CD? I have a DVD writer, but it doesn't accomplish what you're looking for (it's part of my computer). Maybe it's just me, but I haven't heard of any devices that do that.

No, I'm not sure if they do have anything that you can plug a VCR into and record from it onto a DVD. I think all of the devices I've been finding are a combo deal, such as Samsung's DVD-VR325 DVD/VCR Recorder, which has the ablity to record from VCR to DVD, but it's all within the same unit. That's a pretty expensive unit, and I've found ones cheaper, like Liteon DVD Recorder LVW-5007, which has the same premise, an all-in-one device. As I said though, the reviews are very mixed so I'm not sure which way to go.

Dad Says... mjudd November 10 2005, 17:04:07 UTC
My father emailed me back about the DVD recorder. The one he bought is called "Liteon." He said it wasn't expensive but it did have some "good features." It's a combo VCR/DVD recorder so making DVDs from VHS tapes is pretty easy. It also supports most formats of DVDs which include DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc. It operates on software called "Allwrite" (or something like that).

Down side: There are no editing capabilities. In order to get editing capabilities, you'll need to get a very expensive DVD recorder or have one installed on your computer.

For the simple stuff (copy home movies, tape shows, etc.), it's great for him. CompUSA had the best price for the one he bought.

Hope that helps! :)

Consumer Reports vwilliams November 10 2005, 21:37:50 UTC
I went onto consumer reports with the intent of cutting and pasting their results onto LJ, but they have an entire interactive where they ask you what features are most important, etc. I selected price and need for VHS conversion/TIVo as the most important factors and there were 4 pages of results, which they presented in a huge spreadsheet, too big to paste here. The top results however, were:

Lite-On LVC-9006
Samsung DVD-VR320
Toshiba D-VR4
Panasonic DMR-ES30V

I guess Michelle's Dad subscribes to CR, too ;)

I strongly recommend a subscription to it if you're buying a major purchase. I signed up when I was looking for a new car (beep beep). It's worth it.
