i) Esther was born at the wrong end of Delphi. She's where she is because of weak men and superior intelligence.

ii) Esther speaks eight languages fluently; she thinks it's the only way to stay on top in a place like Delphi.

iii) Named after a biblical Queen; her name means star, and, a long time ago, an old woman told her that she was going to shine like one. She always believed it to be true.

a) Leckie is one of those people who I loved the character and then fell almost as in love with the actual man (Nate Fick is another). Helmet For My Pillow is just a consumate piece of literature and I want to write like him.

b) Leckie wasn't ruined by the war; he came home and he wrote books and sports (and in my head, he quietly let Hoosier go). You have to admire that.

About Joe Liebgott. I need to give more thought to Webster, since he was never really my baby.

i. Joe Liebgott is the oldest of eight kids and he always wanted better for the others than he had.

ii. or the first years of his life, Joe didn't speak any English at ome.

iii. For years and years afterwards, he dreams about the camp and what he said and didn't say and the looks on their faces as they locked the gates.

i. The 'Gemma' in Tunny's tattoo is his Grandma; his mother was never that great at raising him, but he loves his Grandma.

ii. Tunny always thought that Will was the nicest of the three of them; he never figured out how to be as mean as Johnny and Tunny could be, when they tried.

iii. He never marries the Extraordinary Girl (who's name is Grace), but they are together for a really, really long time.
