because Patricia McKillip's writing is always stunningly and hauntingly beautiful.
Yes, it is!
The Raven Boys has been all over my flist as the "hot new book", yep -- I'm considering tracking it down. Is it worth the hype, in your opinion?
I did not realize Sin ended up so high on your list of characters (although I think she might be my second favorite, after Alan, for the series. No, third favorite, after Alan and Mae and Jamie's mom). Oda was definitely one of the things I liked best about the Matthew Swift books -- she is such a memorable character! (and I think the reason it's taken me so long to go back to reading the series is the lack of Oda and Ms Dees.
Also, that's a lot of Kate Elliott! I read the first... four? five? Crown of Stars books at some point, about a decade ago, but my interest in them gradually petered out as the scope widened to the point where I had trouble keeping track of everyone...
(Also, this reminds me I need to go answer your comment on the other post!)
Hmm I don't know whether I'd rec the Raven Boys yet or not. They're definitely interesting and the characters are very appealing in a filled of fails yet sympathetic and oh no, baby don't!!! kind of way. And the overall atmosphere of both magic and teenage-hood is very well realised. OTOH the plot... didn't really go anywhere in the first book. It was severely lacking in conclusion, and i'm in the middle of the second book now, and I still have no idea where it's going so I'm waiting to get a sense of the direction of the plot before I would really rec it. (If I were to compare it to anything it would be to Pamela Dean's Tam Lin.)
I think Sin really did end up being the most interesting character for me, yes. I love the theme of performance she embodies and the way she related to the market and the thing with responsibility
( ... )
A comparison with Tam Lin makes it sound quite appealing! Well, I'm buried in books at the moment anyway, so maybe I'll see what you think of the next book(s? how many are out, anyway?)
the sense that people's stakes and values are those of people who live in a feudal society. Things like the importance of the church, and its politics.
Yes! I really liked the way the church and its prominence was handled, specifically!
