I think one of the most interesting thing about the way Xavier and Magneto contrast is how you can root their difference of attitude from their background.

I've barely reached parts about Xavier's and Magneto's backstories in my X-Men reading so far, so it's great to read this post. :)

I think they're pretty spread out in a variety of places. Actually I never saw the original version of Xavier's backstory, just stuff that are summed up for a new story.

Yes, pretty much this, exactly. It's why they keep talking past each other on some crucial points. It's also one reason I keep getting so frustrated with fandom when people keep missing this point, that it's not just optimism vs. pessimism but two different problems at heart.)

Btw, I really like how well Xavier's backstory works together with his telepathy - which makes certain he's always aware of people as individuals - to solidify a worldview. Great stuff.

I love the nuances and the complexities of their opposition. I can't say I think either are right or wrong, I think they're both right and wrong in different ways XD I hate when it's simplified.

Yes! His power defines Xavier also in a lot of ways - both in being afraid of his own power and in how he relates with people because he can see what it's their head.

Thank you :)

I'm only a casual fan, but I never knew that background about Charles and how the "institution" affected him. Interesting stuff!

Thanks for putting this into words. Eric (I still think of him as Magnus) has something to protect from monstrous people outside the family group. Charles has to protect the family group from the abused-turned-abuser.

Wow, very insightful! Yes, that makes it go one step further in the way they identify threats and prepare for them.
