I will read A Night in the Lonesome October at least once a year, though not always in October. My copy is actually falling apart -- I need to replace it.
I shouldn't have said that, because I don't really have anything to point to, just vague impressions I got in some links to LJ kerfuffles in past years. Ignore me, please!
I thought of you every time By flirted with Ivan (and during the "nobody is sleeping with Byerly" scene). "Mellow" is a very good way to describe this book in general -- which is really fitting for Ivan, but, yeah, not exactly blow-you-away narratiely.
You know, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and Vlad Taltos bookss. I read them and I enjoy them, and two months after, let alone 6, I have absolutely no memory about what happened in them. Oh wait, was it the one with Aliera being accused and Vlad having to play lawyer? Yeah, I think it wasI used to have this exact experience with Vlad books (and thought it was just me, but maybe it's the way he writes if it's not just me XP). Lately I've been keeping the plots from leaving my brain by talking about Dragaera nonstop, but that seems to be the only antidote XP

I think you're going to fall in love with one of the character in Rivers of London SO HARD.
Yes! I mostly read 8 days for the norse gods being in it XD It's pretty hard to find, legally or illegally (i only managed because I was lucky to find a file uploaded secretly) so if you want me to send the file to you, ask away.
Yeah, it has exactly the sort of flaws you'd expect from former fic writers. It's sad because so many other ficcers make awesome pro writers. Oh well.
I agree that Captain Vorpatril's Alliance had no earth-shattering impact, or Nexus-spanning crises... but it was still a very fun read. I can't seem to get enough of Vorkosiverse lately, to the extent that I read most of the fanfics over at archiveofourown.org too. :-) It just shows how overshadowed Ivan usually is by Miles, and how most people want to go "Okaaay, let's back away slowly!" when dealing with Miles. :-)
And I totally get what you mean about Taltos. I'd forgotten all about Iorich myself, to the extent that on a reread, it was like reading it for the first time! Which has its good and bad sides.
I don't mind the low key thing as such; actually, I don't mind the low key in term of scope of stakes; it's more the lack of characterisation upheaval. I know on failfandom_meme some people where contrasting it with Twenty Year Man, which is a fanfic which asides from being slash; does stuff with Ivan's character without breaking his character that does take him to new place and challenge himself and make important realisations about himself. I think that's what was lacking in CVA, especially because that's what I usually like about the books in this series, there aren't afraid of evolving the characters by challenging them, you know?

it's a good book. I'm not sure I could do that frequent a reread, but well worth one from times to times.

I have given up on Brust (long before I knew anything about him besides that his books just didn't work for me).
