old mangas

Back home from my parents'. New year feasting went well. There were some interesting discussions.

While at was at my parents', I took advantage of my old library to re-read two manga series : Please Save My Earth and RG Veda.

Please Save My Earth is a late 80's shoujo manga involving a cast of seven high school characters realising that they are ( Read more... )

I'm one of the probably rare persons that never really could get warm with CLAMP, except for Card Captor Sakura. I have read several mostly positive reviews of RG, but because the other CLAMP manga didn't strike my fancy, I never read it. I don't even know if it is published in German. Was it published in France? For a very long time, during the 90s, France was much ahead in publishing manga.

AFAIK France's still ahead of the US in terms of quantity of manga titles released, second after Japan. However, there's more shoujo and BL titles translated in the US than in France, I believe. CLAMP's works were, overall, translated very early in France and have been very popular here (among both male and female audiences) and Tokyo Babylon and RG Veda for example have been translated here way before it was in the US. I've no idea about how it compares to translation in other European countries though.

You're far from being a "rare person". I think most clamp titles are hit-or-miss : some people love they way they do themes, characterisation, crack and angst; and some people hate it. People who don't like it are more likely to enjoy their comedy works or CCS (which is relatively more mainstream and less crackful than their other works). I think if you don't like other clamp works like X, XXXholic or Tokyo Babylon, you're not likely to enjoy RG Veda.

if you think being a teenager wasn't confusing enough by itself, try being a young guy whose past lives was a woman who was in love with the guy who's current life is your male best friend

Lol, that made me think of my Changeling stories - I forget if you read those or not, I know you like Changeling anyway :) Where the male main character's current girlfriend was his male best friend in their past lives, and his lover in the past life is now his sister. And it's more complicated than that, even, but anyway - fun!

I'm afraid I haven't (I often find reading Original Fiction online daunting, I'm not entirely sure why), but now I kinda want to because I love this kind of relationship mess! :D

I do too, evidently :) I'll warn you straight up that if you decide to read them, the first few chapters can be rough going, as a) I didn't plan to write a freakin' novel, it just sort of happened, and b) I was originally just writing for the amusement of myself and a few of my old players, so I didn't explain things as much as I would have for someone who didn't know the setting/characters involved (it's spun off from a campaign I ran sometime in the last century, with the MCs being the now-teenage children of the characters from back then.) I think around chapter 8 is where I started actually thinking "crap, I have a real story to tell here, I should probably do this properly!" Before that there are some interesting character things, in terms of setting up the relationships, but fairly limited plot. If I were doing it over again, I'd cut some of the early chapters and introduce the characters more clearly, but I can't be bothered at this stage! That said, it's something I'm quite proud of, and I flatter myself that it's an ( ... )
