Howdy. My first official day of unemployment started with realising the internet wasn't working at home x_x happily, the thing got rectified this evening

I can understand why an author prefers not to hear about fanfiction, but I don't understand hating it per se. If it's good, then it is just another way of discussing the characters and theories of a much loved book or TV show, and, well, if it's bad, I wouldn't read it. ^___^
(I have to admit that I like HP fanfic and essays much more than the books, because the different reading experiences are very interesting. Just like the different reading experiences of ASOIAF are interesting, even if sometimes you simply hit the limits of your and others perceptions.)
I have a thing for seeing sexist jerks slashed, I'm not sure why ^^ With Theon it started with reading a few genius Theon/Jon fics (I love hatesex, obviously) and the fact it's a brillant way to deal with both the boys issues and the reasons why they hate each others (basically, jealousy over Ned/belongingness to the family). Then, Theon/Robb is also brillant in a boysih worship/teenage discovering sex way. Wait a minute, I'll give you recs.
I can understand why an author prefers not to hear about fanfiction, but I don't understand hating it per se.Words! I don't think GRRM hates fanfics, to his credit, I think he just doesn't think it's an appropriate way to learn the trade which is, well, condescending as hell, and kinda missing the point (lots of ficcers don't care for becoming profic writers), and rather goes against the way lots of people did learn the trade thanks. And yes, it's totally a way to do a commentary as well. Well. Fanfics are many things. The urge to narrate is one of the most primordial urge for people. That's a

as i say, if any other pairing intrigues you (I can vouch for Jaime/Arthur, for example, and there's plenty of Sandor/Sansa, Jaime/Brienne etc. around) the community is small but productive and as frequent in small fic community, the quality is good.
you've got a reading filters for original fic? Oh, of course I want to be there.
Well, as long as it interests you to write HP fics you should definitly do it ^^ I feel sorry for not reading them, but well, I have trouble summoning much enthousiasm.
One of the thing I hate most about living at my parents' is not having msn/aim/whateverm here so I can't chat with you and a few others :( I'm terribly missing it. I hope I can fix that soon and we can get that chat date ^^
I will understand if people start unfriending me someday because of my failure to appear in livejournal very often. ;) Still its nice in the meantime!
And just to make this substantive...good luck again with finding a new job. But enjoy your extra free time while you have it!
I do agree about the reason for GRRM's views on fanfiction. He thinks people should be making up their own worlds if they want to become a serious writer. Its good practice. Which is strange because I always had the impression that GRRM did his own fan fics when young but maybe I just misinterpreted that. Or maybe he feels it was wasted creativity.
OMG, you hadn't even friended me before, you bastard :p
I blame you for GRRM's idiotic view of fanfics! ^^ Nah, seriously, as I was saying above, not every ficcers want to become serious writers, and some manage it despite having learned by writing derivative fiction (fanfics being only a special kind of reviled derivative fiction because it uses characters not in the public domain - see things like Robin Hood & King Arthur fantasy which nobody objects too, or books like Wicked, March, or The Wind Long Gone which actually get substantial academic acclaim - or because they're not commercialized within a franchise)
Fair points about fanfics. If I could write, coming up with a few could be a lot of fun. :) And fun is good.
lol...I cannot deny my bastardom. While I have the account for ever, I only added a few friends 9 months ago. I should have chased everyone down but I fail at LJ. And at least you didn't have to wonder why I was an ever silent friend if I had friended you. :p (Hope you hadn't friended me too long ago either before I noticed).
