Excellent write-up!
I also think a very telling moment for Derek was during that shoot-out:
Man: "Not my girl!"
Derek: "Not my boy."
He already feels a deep love for John, I think.

Incidentally, and kind of off topic, but didn't that girl say the man wasn't her dad? Then why did he say 'my girl'? o___o
But yeah that's right. He already feels like John is his.

UNLESS... they guy was saying it as in "that's not my girl."
And Derek's response (though less heart warming) is equally valid (ie. you have nothing on me, either).

....But I have chosen to take Derek's response as having a completely different meaning from the man. :)
