Well, we know that John is a loaner in the future, so I didn't want to put anything into this fic that might hint at anything different. Being gay could definitely make him feel like he can never be close to anyone, and by having the only man he's ever felt strongly for--Charley--be in love with someone else (ironically, his uncle), it could easily make him down on love. John is destined for a lonely life full of sacrifice being the leader of the free people of the world, and I wanted to try to do his past justice with this fic.
