Lost is good, also Firefly. If you want weightier stuff try The Wire, Deadwood and Rome, all of which are adult in nature and really good with it. The Wire in particular as it may well be The Best TV Show Ever.

See, I even had The Wire seasons 1 to 5 in my amazon basket as Rowing Viewing, and then I read a little more about it and... it just doesn't sound like my thing.

Yeah, and I hesitated before listing it because it wouldn't necessarily be your thing, but it's sort of my default recommend at the moment, cause I loves it so. I think you'd apreciate the writing, and for some reason reckon that, like me, you'd really love season 2, but I'll let it g at that.
Give Prison Break a try! Like Lost and 24 it's pure cliffhanger telly with a terrific central premise that is at once amazingly compelling and as daft as a bag full of brushes carried by a badger on his way to the brush shop for daft badgers, but the pacing never lets up, the twists come thick and fast and there's at least one deliciously evil performance from a Charatcer You Want To Die Though The Series Wouldn't Be As Much Fun Without Him.
I saw a couple of episode of something called Being Human that might appeal to you. A ghost, a vampire and a werwolf share a flat. Sounds like a sitcom, but it's more British down-budget Joss Wheedon territory, and I quite like what I saw of it.

And I would concur with downthread recommends of Veronica Mars and West Wing.
