Two Things

1) There is something very disturbing about being near somebody who is so fat and unfit that they breathe noisily when just sitting down at rest. This has happened to me twice recently, and it was all I could do not to snap at them ( Read more... )

Do you have to use Outlook.. can't you quietly install Thunderbird or do they frown upon this?

For some reason I'd assumed that being a hardcore techie company you were all on suns or something.

Outlook isn't just email, don't forget. All meetings are organised using Outlook, and all company email addresses are stored as a whatever-it-is-in-microsoftese, Exchange Server Address Book or something.

Ah right.

I have to confess that I have achieved the remarkable feat of never using outlook, either at work or home, throughout any of my jobs.

For this you are to be congratulated! What about for your WP needs? I've heard that many law types are stuck with WordPerfect on account of the many templates they are required to use? As true in the UK as (allegedly) the US?

It could be worse... you could have to use Lotus Notes. Actually scratch that, I'm not sure that Notes is worse any more. They're just both very bad.

Most folks I work with swear by notes as a complete solution to all our needs (instead of using Word, Outlook, bugzilla, testcase manager and all the rest) Needless to say it hasn't been implemented but they live in hope.

We've used it for bug-tracking and various things like that, and it does have its merits. However, either the people setting it up aren't competant enough, or it's not capable of more complex interactions, and we've always ended up scrapping them for something more capable.

I know someone in IBM (the owners of Lotus) who tells me that people there have similar ambitions, however they have a name for those people: delusional.

The only people I've ever met who advocate the use of Lotus Notes have been people I don't like. I think that speaks for itself.

Go to Tools, Rules and alerts, and edit your existing rules (individually) to "display desktop alert". I think that will do the popup window when a new mail arrives into one of the folders.

I gotta admit, I'm #1 up there. But in my defense it's been a horrific year for me and mine, and physical fitness has NOT been a priority. Also, when I was adjusting to the CPAP I'd find myself breathing funny when I'd go from a state of being in motion to a state of being at rest. That's resolved, fortunately.

FWIW this isn't a "you're being fatphobic!" rant. I try to be aware that my size can make things uncomfortable for folks-- ie, I sit next to the aisle on a plane to give my seatmates more room & don't take the armrest, I give up my seat on the bus, make sure that I have clearance around me, etc etc etc. It's just basic manners.
