Merci beaucoup! Looking on Wikipedia we were apparently part of an 'observer-participant dialectic' and that 'this stance, simultaneously part of and apart from, combines sociological, anthropological, literary and historical notions of the relationship between the individual and the greater populace'. Gosh. We did all that just by walking about and looking at the city. Cool.
I believe the word you're looking for is 'flaneuring' or 'flaneury'. What one indulges in when one is a flaneur (ie wandering round a city going 'ooh, city'.) I do it quite a lot.
