Wind Storm 2k6 and Blood Diamond

Dean and I were without power for almost 20 hours yesterday/today. The power went out around 10 PM last night due to a severe wind storm that came through the Puget Sound area. Of course, we should be thankful that it wasn't worse. In some areas, trees went through houses and fell in the roadways. I think about 90,000 people are still without power

I saw a news report the other day on this very issue. They were discussing how the people who have taken over Harry Winston (the big diamond people, I am told) have made a commitment to try and certify their diamonds as conflict-free. Or at the very least, to have that information available to consumers for each diamond they have. The reporter kept asking if the average consumer actually cares. The rep from Harry Winston did his best to hide his indignation at such a question, but by the second or third time he was asked it, he simply replied, "Well WE care." There was also an author that they interviewed who wrote a book on the subject, though for the life of me I can't remember what the title is. The author was much more pessimistic about the whole thing, saying that it is nearly impossible to know whether a diamond is conflict-free or not.
