Tae Kwon Do 101

Feb 05, 2012 19:00

I keep meaning to write something about Taekwondo, but then I never quite get around to it. Sometimes it's because I feel like it's too daunting, trying to do a post that covers approximately six months of my life (even if it's only one aspect of it) and sometimes it's because I figure no one is going to read it, so why bother. But I'm going to ( Read more... )

Congrats on the belt and finding something you enjoy. That's a wonderful thing!

I care, I am tinking of picking up a martial art for exercise when I can afford it, reading about TKD from you two is a big help.

I will warn you that it's not generally cheap. I think Deb pays around $100 a month, and I just paid $535 for six months, and then there's testing fees. I actually am going to have to get sparring gear soon, and I have no idea how much that might end up costing.

But it's fun, and it's definitely a good workout!

Thanks for the warning, we've tried the gym thing and we never went. I'm hoping a class like that will make me go.

I care, but you knew that. :) I'm still so glad you enjoy it, and yes, I'm mailing the shirt, either tomorrow or Tuesday. I might not get to tomorrow because yoga starts up again. And the resolutions sound awesome.

BTW, both Kevin and I noticed that there is a tournament coming up in Tolland (there were posters at our tournament this weekend). You should look into it! The way it was phrased, it might be a black belt only tournament, but maybe not. It's weirdly fun to go represent your school at one.

There doesn't seem to be any details about the tournament online yet, although I did find the one for last years - it seems to be annual. At this point, though, I'm not sure I'm tournament-ready. The only thing I would be able to do is my form, since we really haven't done any true sparring yet. And it's not really worth $65 (or however much it is) to do my form and possibly get eliminated right off, since it's double elimination.

Well, you're probably about as sparring ready as anyone else of your belt level, right? That's the thing, you're all beginners!

I wonder if they mean elimination like we did it last weekend. Basically, two people would do their forms at the same time, and the judges would pick which was better. It was bracketed, so it kind of just kept crawling up the bracket as they sorted out by winner vs. winner and loser vs. loser to figure out the rankings.

Yes, it's that sort of elimination.

I also don't have sparring gear yet, so that would also be somewhat problematic.
