Of Love and Meaning

Pairings: NONE. Gen. Maybe hints of SasuSaku if you squint.
Summary: Sai and Kakashi, on Sasuke and love. How far will you go for that feeling?
Kakashi watched above his book as Ino and Shikamaru stood in either side of Naruto while Chouji silently guided them with hand signals and Sakura monitored the equipment making sure Naruto stayed alive.
Kakashi wasn’t exactly surprised with Sai questioning him, as he seemed to thrust for any knowledge he could get, but he’d be lying if he said he suspected that Sai would ask him during a time like this.
“Why are Sakura-chan and Naruto-kun doing so much for Sasuke-kun?” Sai said, and Kakashi noted that his voice had taken a slightly worried tone naturally.
Kakashi set down his book and looked at Sai for a moment, he was frowning and clenching his fists slightly. Kakashi couldn’t help but note that he was getting more and more in touch with his feelings, and was quite pleased that Sai’s training wasn’t as good as it was boasted about among the ANBU.
“Because they love him,” Kakashi said.
“Do you love him?” Sai said, and looked at him with a strange intensity in his eyes.
Kakashi didn’t answer him right away; he looked at Naruto and Sakura. Sakura’s face was lined with determination and sweat was pouring down Naruto’s face. He thought about the last time he’d spoken with Sasuke, how angry he was, how he yelled and screamed and nearly cried. How Kakashi felt when he told them that they’d both found precious companions. How relief had taken over him when Sasuke flinched and looked guilty.
About how different Sasuke was from Obito, but how he still managed, like Obito had, to make Kakashi to not want to hide behind his masks.
He looked down and smiled at Sai and said, “I do.”
Sai looked torn between smiling and frowning harder. “This should make me happy. But I just feel,” he lowered his head and Kakashi suspected he was trying to think of the word to describe what he was feeling, “Bad. I don’t want Naruto-kun and Sakura-chan to get hurt anymore.”
“They’ve made it through many hard things,” Kakashi said, letting his voice take a softer tone. “They’ll make it through this.”
Sai’s head shot up and something burned in the back of his eyes. “You didn’t see how they looked when Sasuke-kun went on about how he’d give his life for his brother again and again. And how they cried when he left with Orochimaru and Kabuto.” He paused for a moment and then added, “I don’t want them to cry anymore. I said I’d help them, but I don’t want to if it makes them keep hurting.”
Kakashi sighed and set his hand on Sai’s shoulder, “It isn’t that simple, Sai. Naruto and Sakura have shed many tears for Sasuke, and the only way they’ll stop crying is if they save him.”
They were both quiet for a moment, and Sai seemed to be pondering Kakashi’s words. “What if they can’t save Sasuke?”
Kakashi didn’t say anything right away. He looked back at Sakura, who was staring at the monitor with the same insane look she had when she talked about what she’ll do when she and Naruto brought Sasuke back. Naruto was still sweating, and his body was trembling as tiny whimpers escaped his mouth.
Shikamaru bit biting his bottom lip hard, clearly putting all of his chakra into keeping his shadow from disappearing. Chouji had stopped his movements, as he was looking at his best friend, worried.
“Chouji!” Ino hissed. “We have to do this. Shikamaru is counting on you. I’m counting on you.”
Chouji closed his eyes tightly and gave a short nod.
“I don’t see how they can’t,” Kakashi said.
