Love the manifesto. Very well written, good and clear explanations, and the blood type info was a nice touch (it's amusing how true they both are to the characters!). I'm not really a huge fan of this pairing (yet), but I've been meaning to try and check out some more things for it, since it really does have a lot of potential, so your list of recs should come in handy.
By the way, I just noticed one small problem... Zack and Cloud were in Hojo's lab for 5 years, and Zack was 18 at the Nibelheim mission, so that would make him 23 when they got out, not 25. Just mentioning ^_^;
Anyway, great manifesto. You did a really good job!
I was thinking right through reading this that it belongs on ship_manifesto and am happy to see it is! Last time I looked in there the only FF essays were Seph/Cloud, Cloud/Tifa and Auron/Jecht. (The Seph/Cloud one was what really started me in the fandom.)
There's one point that I have read other interpretations of - the issue of the clones (I have read a treatise that brings up points of game dialog that puts doubt on the idea of the person with the no.1 tattoo as being Sephiroth, and that neither Zack or Cloud got tattooed) - and I have come to believe that Last Order's version of the confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth before Seph ended up in the mako is more believable (Cloud still pushes him, but against a wall, leaving him surprised and confounded that a simple trouper could do such) but those are just niggles.
All in all though, this is a very good essay, good work. ;)
I also believe that Last Order's versio is more believable. Cloud was only a trooper then and not enhanced with mako/Jenova cells. Really, the fact that Seph jumped in is more plausible than Cloud pushing him in, even if it was by chance.
Ah, nice, nice! Ship_Manifesto needs more FFVII manifestos, some more to keep the scant few company. I agree with you that ZackxCloud is entirely too cute. Especially with the poor boy's Dissociative episodes. Though post-game ZackxCloud would be a little too close to wanking for my tastes, probably. There's a lot of fics with Zack and Cloud, though so many of them, it's hard to say exactly where they cross the border into a pairing. Twig's newest, Exegesis, has some really nice Zack & Cloud bits, though I'm fairly sure that it's on the non-pairing side. Still, they do blur the line a tad.
Yea, I'm reading Twig's newest one. Her(?) first epic also had a great portrayal of Zack and Cloud's relationsihhp but they weren't the pairing. Hence the reason why I didn't include it.
