I miss writing.

That's surprising, I guess, considering how much I disliked writing in high school. But the fact is, writing my thesis was one of my favorite parts of the whole process. Try creative nonfiction! Basically, "Write essays about whatever the hell you damn well please and don't worry too hard about things like fact-checking!"

I'd pick up Anne Carson's "Eros the Bittersweet," Eula Biss's "The Balloonist," and if you haven't already, Sagan's "Contact" which is a totally legitimate book and worlds better than the movie even if it lacks Jodie Foster.

Among the three I think you may find some ways of approaching form, length, and content that address the problem of research-based literature, how to make shorter essays into a collection, and an interesting take on how to take the scientific/historical and make it personal and appealing to a wider audience.

But hey, I graduated with a degree in theater and poetry and am now an unemployed grantwriter, so take all that with several grains of kosher salt.
