Pavilion Musings

J! and I got very lucky at Estrella, and managed to pick up a used arming round. We haven't put it up yet (probably this weekend is the weather holds). We're assuming it's in good shape - we know the seams need to be resealed, hopefully nothing else.

If you remember what ours look like... ...roughly 2x2 made octagonal with stops for the perimeter and Octagonal 4x4's for the up rights.

We made them ourselves. Not too bad in terms of time really, but having or having access to the right tools is key. You are of course welcome to play in our workshop anytime.

I find these pretty easy to follow. We use the joiner on the perimeter poles too as it is much faster than the router.

Also we didn't rip the second set of vertical poles we made as we felt more confident about the stouter poles made from 4x4s.

Thanks! My mom and I did the poles on my regent - of course, I got lucky and had tipi poles to use, which meant we just had to cut them to length and sink the pegs :-)

But I think you're right, and we'll end up making the poles ourselves. Now I just have to find a place to get good tent stakes that won't charge an arm and a leg... rope is easy. :-)

I like our Tent Smith ones ($3.50 a piece now). We do use 18 inch concrete spikes in the corners (36 inch if the ground is bad ala Estrella). I also know folks that use the 10 penny nails on the perimeter with concrete spikes in the corners.

As someone that's purchased tents from both Panther and Tent Smiths, I think I like the seem pattern on Tent Smiths a bit more. The oval might not have the problem, but the Marquee I bought years ago (the one Haouc now has) has never really looked right. It's always seemed a bit frumpy. My round and hunrvogt's Marquee both seem a bit more prim and proper. Something about how the seem lines align with the pole locations on the Marquee and the pockets on my spider round.

Either way, Tent smiths has a lovely octagon bit you can use to join an upright pole to make it shorter. We ripped a 4x4 for my upright and it's worked pretty well. The octagon looks very cool.

It's also dead easy to make poles out of 2x2s (hunrvogt style) or round closet dowels (my old marquee).

I've always used 10 penny nails with washers on the round, but it doesn't look period enough for period camping, in my opinion.

J!'s regent is from Panther, mine is from Tentsmiths. And I do like mine better, although my one beef about it over the years is that the seams aren't internally finished (they're felled, but not lapped.) Is that something they have changed?
