title: friends to call home
subject: harry potter, hogwarts founders.
notes: made for waywardmixes, theme: groups. I have so much headcanon about these four it's slightly absurd.

Stand together, be strong from within.

Canon
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of a wizard, Harry Potter and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hogwarts is divided into four houses, each bearing the last name of its founder: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff.

Houses
Gryffindor house values courage, bravery, nerve and chivalry. The house mascot is the lion, with the colours being red and gold; it corresponds to the element of fire.

Hufflepuff house values hard work, patience, fairness and loyalty. The house mascot is the badger, with the colours being black and yellow; it corresponds to the element of earth.

Ravenclaw house values intelligence, creativity, education and wit. The house mascot is the eagle, with the colours being blue and bronze; it corresponds to the element of air.

Slytherin house values cunning, ambition, resourcefulness and leadership. The house mascot is the snake, with the colours being green and silver; it corresponds to the element of water.

Godric Gryffindor
By Gryffindor, the bravest were prized far beyond the rest.

I'm waiting for the call, the hand on the chest,
I'm ready for the fight and fate.
Raised on the moors of the West Country, he learned what he could about magic from his parents. He found his strengths in dueling, in passionate magic that required strength, not concentration.

In his early twenties, he met the other three founders They became close, completing each other, filling out weakness and flaws with strengths. Godric and Salazar became especially close, always so similar and like minded, but each with different takes on near identical personalities.

When Salazar left, Godric floundered, unsure of things - how Hogwarts could continue with only three, how he could continue without one of his best friends, someone who'd come to mean more than he should to Godric. It was Hogwarts, Godric realized, that he need to devote his life to. He worked tirelessly, not only for the school itself, but for the students and Helga and Rowena themselves.

Hogwarts became his life's work, but late in life, he made the decision to leave, unsure he could keep up with the new students. He passed away early in the 12th Century, surrounded by friends and family.

Helga Hufflepuff
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were most worthy of admission.

I will remain when everything changes.
Helga grew up in the Welsh valleys, surrounded by the love of her large family. While she adored her family and everything they gave her, she was never fulfilled by the life she had there. She knew she was strong, magically, and her father had always made sure to spare time to teach her but the way other children, her own siblings and cousins included, were neglected in their magical studies had always bothered her.

As a young adult, she made the decision to leave her home with her close friend Rowena, who had helped her to run a small school in their community, and travel Britain, hoping to find new ways to teach magic in other communities. On her travels, she met Godric, whom she introduced to Rowena and Salazar. They became fast friends and when Helga broached the topic of why she was travelling, they came up with the idea of a school for magical children.

The school was everything Helga had wanted in her life, and so, as she valued justice and fairness, she made the choice to take the children that the other founders would not. She devoted herself to the school, and when Salazar left, she hid the way it hurt her. She comforted Godric and Rowena when they grieved openly, and hid her grief behind her sunny disposition, never letting on the pain of what she saw as betrayal.

With Salazar gone, she was determined for Hogwarts to continue to flourish. Her students became her children, her house, as well as Rowena and Godric her family. She stayed at Hogwarts, as headmistress, until her death.

Rowena Ravenclaw
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest would always be the best.

With her love of education and learning, Rowena had always loved to help Helga teaching children. However, she'd also known she was destined for more, more than their small village and a handful of children. Family had never been terribly important to her, she felt loyalty for those who deserved it, those who gave it back to her, like Helga. When Helga decided she wished to travel, Rowena naturally went with her.

Months into their travels, Rowena was introduced to an incredibly impressive wizard by the name of Salazar Slytherin. They bonded instantly, both intelligent and ambitious with a desire for something more. When they later met Godric, someone Rowena could never quite wrap her head around, no matter how much she loved him, and Helga broached the topic of creating a school, Rowena was on board from the very beginning. She put much of her creativity into creating Hogwarts, including the ever changing floor plan, more of a testimony to her magical abilities than anything incredibly practical (she would later admit that Salazar goaded her into it, always pushing her to new boundaries).

The argument over whether or not to allow muggle born students was difficult for Rowena. She agreed with Salazar that they should only accept the best, but she was never sure if best necessarily meant pure blood. She shared her opinions, but could not convince Salazar to stay. In the end, Salazar left before she could announce to her fellow founders that she was pregnant, and she never did tell Helga and Godric who the father was, though she sent a letter to Salazar to inform him. She never found out if he'd received it, as she never got a reply. Despite the pain of the loss of her best friend, she threw herself into raising her daughter, Helena, to be the greatest witch she could be, as well as pushing the Ravenclaw students the way Salazar had always pushed her.

When Helena betrayed her by stealing her diadem and fleeing, the hurt combined with the grief she had never gotten over from Salazar leaving finally got the better of Rowena and she fell fatally ill. She too died at Hogwarts, with Helga, her childhood friend ever by her side, having never heard from Salazar or Helena ever again.

Salazar Slytherin
And power-hungry Slytherin loved those of great ambition.

Salazar had always known he was meant for more than he seemed destined for. Noble by birth, his early life consisted of little more than tutors and learning dull things that would barely be useful for him as an adult. Not only did he have to have the typical magical education, his parents had also enforced muggle learnings on him as well.

He did not so much as run away from home as he left without informing anyone. He headed for cities, looking for something more, a way to make a name for himself. He found friends, especially in Godric, the complement to him and Rowena, the one who was so much like him and through them, he found the way to make a name for himself. It was he who decided the houses should bear their names, a way to guarantee his immortality.

He enjoyed teaching, bringing up a new generation of ambitious wizards and witches and teaching them only the important, valuable things, but it wasn't to last. When Godric, and then Helga, started pushing for muggle borns to be allowed to attend, he couldn't understand where his friends, the ones who had wanted to help magical children to be the best had gone. Rowena was, as ever, on his side but even she admitted she could see a point in Godric and Helga's arguments. With that, he knew he was outnumbered and he chose to leave, not wanting his name to be attached to the betrayal of their kind.

Without Hogwarts, he travelled Britain and then Europe, trying to find new ways to fulfill his ambition. He never found anything as worthwhile as Hogwarts, and eventually settled in France as a potion maker with his wife, Diana. He bore children, and taught them instead of sending them to a school. On his deathbed, he admitted to his wife that he regretted leaving his friends, but he would have never admitted it to them or gone back to Hogwarts. Similarly, he never admitted, not even to his wife, that his youngest daughter Ebba was named for Godric's beloved sister.
