Oh man, I miss Ten

We've just finished watching S4 (4 epis in one sitting) and I can say with pride: I have successfully turned my daughters into Doctor Who fans. :) They both adore Ten (well, who wouldn't) and they love Captain Jack. #1 loves Donna, #2 loves Rose, both hate Donna's mom....
K. has a Ten wallpaper on her computer where he's holding a cat in his hand, ( Read more... )

S4 is my favourite as well. And I love that outtake from Human Nature!

I was wondering, do you think the older series, i.e. pre-nine series are still worth watching or do they appear very dated?
I've never watched any of the old epis, I never got round to it, and besides, none of my friends have them on DVD, so I can't borrow them.

Oh very much so, considering you have 40 years of canon to choose from. Mind you, not every episode etc., just like with every other show. And the dating question is different for each Doctor. For example, I'd never start a newbie with the show's very beginning, because that's incredibly slooooooooow, and also, the characterisation of the characters isn't yet what it will be later, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't reccomend First Doctor adventures. The Aztecs is the One serial I'd reccommend any time. (BTW, bear in mind that the way these old series worked as in 20 minutes installments, so if what you get on dvd is very long, it's simply because it's all those 20 minutes put together to make two hours or more. :) The Aztecs is a great showcase for a historical, all the characters at that point had been defined, the One/Cameca relationship is echoed many regenerations later with Ten and Madame de Pompadour, and it's a fantastic showcase for Barbara (Ian and Barbara being the first companions, with Susan as the Doctor's granddaughter ( ... )

You might want to also try Genesis of the Daleks. It's a Four story, which means it has the familiar hat/scarf Doctor that most people associated with Doctor Who pop culture-wise before the current series. Plus, it's got Sarah Jane, and the Daleks, so there's a lot that's familiar.
