I haven't seen it, so I can't help you with your dilemma about the ending. I always wondered about this film, because the reviews were so mixed when it came out. I did read that it is primarily ad-libbed if that helps you any. Which it probably doesn't. I just have never encountered anybody who has actually seen it. So you liked it?

I really liked it, but I can see how people could -not- like it too. It was very...unusual... ; )

I think that is perhaps why some of the critics weren't so fond of it, as well.
