In Defense of Dragonball Evolution

Uh... that's not a sentence I ever wanted to say, sort of turns my stomach and makes me feel sick. I just can't help it, when people bitch and moan about a movie and then get the facts wrong it drives me nuts.

First things first. This:

See, at least Dragonball Evolution wasn't pretending to be anything that it wasn't. Nobody acting in the movie took it seriously. Everybody (except James Marsters, apparently) knew they were in a cheesy, completely faithless adaption and hammed it up ( ... )

You are so, so, so wrong. They might not have thought they were filming Inglourious Basterds, but they thought they were doing something good. All the actors were signed up for three movies, for crying out loud, and James Masters... my god that man must be on drugs. I can't even count the number of times I heard him go on about how Shakespearean the role was and blah, blah, blah... there's no way he ever read the manga ( ... )

...That was them trying?

Okay, no. Chow Yun Fat can do way better than he did. Even if nobody else there did, we know he knew exactly what it was. The rest, eh. And yeah, they must have cut quite a bit. The running time for the movie is 85 minutes... and the DVD's only got a grand total of 11 minutes worth of deleted scenes.

So either the studio is sitting on about thirty to forty minutes of footage which they refuse to release for whatever reason, or they were shooting from a script missing about a third of it's pages.

Oh, and hey... Disturbingly enough, it looks like there might be a sequel in the works, because it actually earned a fair amount of money. The budget was 45 million. Between DVDs and the International Box Office, it pulled in 63 million or so. That's what, roughly 40% better than the budget?

Yes, I know about the sequel, it's what got me talking about this whole travesty. Alas for the actors, they all signed their lives away... except for Chow Yun-Fat apparently. Anyway, as I said on Facebook, I'm sort of excited to see just how badly they'll fuck up. I also think it's interesting that most of that money came from Asia.

It could be worse. Maybe they'll do things better in the second movie, like The Dark Knight did compared to Batman Begins.

Except instead of going from "Great Movie" to "Awesome Movie", they'll be aiming for So Bad It's Good instead of MST3K material?

I would happy if they just reached the level 'competent filmmaker'.
