POI: Reese's Identity Crisis

Feb 17, 2013 17:30

From a discussion with
mischief. I warned her I would do this!

The first words of the Pilot are Reese's about identity: "When you find that one person who connects you to the world, you become someone different - someone better. When that person is taken from you, what do you become then?"

Thus begins Reese's sometimes amusing but definitely complex relationship with the question: "Who are you?" Here are all the answers I could garner from Season One.

Episode
Reese's response to varieties of "Who are you?"

S1E1: Pilot
"You know it's funny - seems like the only time you need a name now is when you're in trouble." - to Carter.

(Extended Pilot: "You know it's funny - best parts of your life, you don't need a name. You get to be 'dad,' 'sweetheart,' 'pal'...seems like the only time you need a name now is when you're in trouble.")

"A concerned third party." - to Stiles. This is also mocking Finch's answer to him.

S1E2: Ghosts
"I'm more like an independent contractor." - to the number, Bill, in the elevator.

"You're gonna need to trust someone." - to Theresa Whitaker.

S1E3: Mission Creep
"I'm just an ex-soldier that needs some money fast." - to the bank robbers.

S1E4: Cura Te Ipsum
"I already told you: everybody needs someone to talk to." - to Dr. Tillman.

To Andrew Bention: "She fixes people. Not like us. We break 'em." Also, when Benton asks who he is directly, Reese just stares at him, but that starts the thread with Reese saying, "Do you think people ever really change? I mean, you hurt innocent people. And I, well, for a long time I killed people like you." [Thanks to
amarillion.]

S1E5: Judgment
"I'm here to help you." and "You have two questions right now - 'Who are you?' and 'Where is my son?' Which one do you want to focus on?" - to Judge Gates.

S1E6: The Fix
"You could say we're in the same business - fixing problems." - to Zoe Morgan.

S1E7: Witness
"I help people, and you need help." - to 'Mr. Burton' (Elias). Burton is also the first person Reese introduces himself to as John.

S1E8: Foe
"I'm not a diplomat." - to German Intelligence agent.

"I don't care for your name" - Kohl.

S1E9: Get Carter
Carter doesn't need an introduction. :)

S1E10: Number Crunch
Paula asks but is Reese is spared answering by Dane the killer at the door.

S1E11: Super
"I had a rough night." to Trask. and Finch: "That, Detective Carter, is what we do."

S1E12: Legacy
"I'm like you - I give people second chances." - to Andrea Gutierrez.

S1E13: Root Cause
"One of the only people who know you're innocent." - to Scott Powell.

S1E14: Wolf and Cub
"One of these days I'll have to come up with a good answer for that one." - to Darren McGrady.

S1E15: Blue Code
"No. But I've been undercover." - in answer to Cahill's "Who the hell are you? I know you're not a cop."

"What are you, a Fed or something?" "Something."

S1E16: Risk
"No. But I did save your life." - in answer to Saunder's "You're not an asset manager!" (the gun might've been a tip-off.)

Bonus quote: "The safest I've ever been was when I was anonymous."

S1E17: Baby Blue
Reese answers Adnan Petrosian with a choke hold.

S1E18: Identity Crisis
"Who I am doesn't matter right now. What matters is I know who you are." !!! - mission statement to Jordan Hester.

S1E19: Flesh and Blood
"Are you a cop?" "Not even close." - to Caparelli

"My name's John. Your mother sent me." - to Taylor Carter.

S1E20: Matsya Nyaya
"You ever been a security guard anywhere else?" "Here and there." "Mall cop? Supermarket stiff?" "Something like that." - Convo with Tommy Clay

S1E21: Many Happy Returns
"Someone who wants to help you." - to Karen Garner. When she asks him again, he says, "My name's John, and I help people out of tough situations."

And then earlier in the timeline Peter Arndt asks him who he is, and we finally obtain the source of the quote from the Pilot. The context changes everything:

"It's a good question. I haven't known the answer for a long time. I know who I was. I was the guy who left her behind. You know why? No reason. Because I thought she deserved someone better than me. I thought she deserved someone who would look after her. Be there for her. I thought she deserved someone like you. So, I don't know. I was hoping you could tell me."

"Tell you what?"

"Who I'm supposed to be now. Now that she's gone. See, when you find that one person who connects you to the world, you become someone different. Someone...better. When that person is taken from you, what do you become then?"
Arndt answers the question by picking up a poker.

S1E22: No Good Deed
Peck asks twice but John doesn't respond.

Then Peck asks Finch, and Finch tells him he built the Machine.

S1E23: Fire Wall
"Let's just say we both help people cope with their problems. I'm just a little bit more 'hands on.'" - to 'Caroline Turing' (Root)

I did a some fast-forwarding (tough as it was), so if I missed any, please let me know!
