He who made kittens put snakes in the grass

[Near midnight, Saturday, August 7th]
[Day 433]I felt it last night, as I stalked the woods and tore into the heart of a young stag. Something powerful in the streets of the town, bloody and bright. I raised my jaws, dripping, from the steaming hole in my prey's side, and I grinned at the sky. A new player in town? Or an old player rising to ( Read more... )

...I don't even wanna think about it, an' it's easier than I'd like ta not do it. Sure, I've seen things bad enough, done in alleys an' leavin' bloodstains that don't come clear until dawn, don't ever come clean. Know where I stand when it comes ta those things.

Don't know where I stand when it comes ta this.

Made a round, same as always, an' come back here when it's done. Noise I'm hearin' ain't enough ta make me worry, not just yet, but when I see who an' what's nosin' around I surely cannot say it improves my night any.

"Hell're you doin' out here?"

He's not quiet, not trying to hide himself, but I'm so involved in what I'm doing that I don't register until he says, "Hell're you doin' out here?"

I look up at him and grin, shadow and ivory. The straw man. Oh, how my Gauekoentzat wanted to play with you, straw man. I wonder if you ever noticed.

...and what does he fucking think I'm doing, anyway? Writing a travel guide? I sneeze again, the days have been dry and the alley dusty, and lick dried blood from the cobblestones. I'm sure you can figure it out, straw man. It's not much of a stretch.

Well, if he's happy with blood someone else shed--'cause Sagert ain't talkin', but he's around ta not talk, so I c'n sorta guess who didn't go after him--then I guess I ain't gonna complain. Fer the moment. "Y'mind shiftin' over a bit?" Not that I'm guessin' I'm gonna find anythin' new, but I oughtta look, even if I ain't gonna find anything more'n dog breath and smears by now. "Miss Wanda not feedin' ya enough?"

Wish I knew why I was in such a damn foul mood, 'xactly.

He stares at me for a minute, all glowering gimlet, and then says, "Y'mind shiftin' over a bit?"

Not at all. All you had to do was ask. I shift to one side, nose still to the ground, and let him explore. I'm assuming he's here for the same reason I am; someone was attacked here. He lived, at least long enough to be carried away, but he certainly wouldn't be in good shape.

"Miss Wanda not feedin' ya enough?" The straw man says as he hunkers down.

Even if I hadn't promised Verdandi, I wouldn't be sniffing around Wanda any more. Not so long as she's suckling Sugaar's whelp, anyway. Not going to risk breaking her so long as that's true, I'm a patient dog. Shouldn't take long for the pup to outgrow the bitch.

I drag my claws in the dust between the cobbles, sniffing hard. The attacker waited here....she, yes, definitely she. Ambush attack, lunged out, seized the man, and went to work. Just at random? Or was he a target?
