Saturday Midday
February 27th, Day 272
Town Market

I’ve been thinking seriously of moving out of my room at the Inn ever since I started working at the ‘Boy, but finding time to go look at places has been hard. I got up late this morning to find snow coming down. Took a moment to watch it before I started swearing at it, and it does look to be the ( Read more... )

Lucky's hooves are muffled by the lazy snowflakes. Damn, but I wish it would finally stop snowing. Sure, it's pretty in November, but it's almost March, damn it! I pull my jacket closer as we hit the outskirts of the market. It's been a week and a half since I've taken over Pa's route, and it's starting to come just that little bit easier, but markets are still weird. So many people I used to know, and even more that I never did. At least I've learned to keep a few extra bottles in the back for those one-shot customers that aren't on Pa's lists ( ... )

The boy driving the wagon reins in the horse to bring the wagon up alongside me, controlling the horse easily but not terribly comfortably, and asks me if he can get me anything. If she can get me anything, I guess, because under the beat-up jacket and jeans seems to be a girl, quite a good-looking one, at that. Nice eyes, at least. Hard to tell about the rest of her, bundled up like she is. She’s not giving me any reason to stop looking, anyway, and if she looks a little peeved I think it’s probably not at me. More likely the weather or the horse or having to be out with both.

She looks familiar, but no one in this town should be, so I put it down to the eyes. Need to answer her question, anyway. “Do you get enough milk this time of year to have cheese?” is the only thing I can think to ask, and as soon as it’s out of my mouth I’m thinking about how rude that sounds. Push my hair back to get the snow out of it and sort of grin up at her, hoping she won’t take offense.

He's direct, anyway. Which is probably for the best, given that I haven't actually made any deliveries yet this morning. Gotta pass through the market, and if last week was any indication, I'm gotta get caught up in all manner of conversation before reaching the other side.

From up close, he's got a grin I can only describe as wolfish. I shake my head. "Sorry. Enough for some, but cheese uses up too much milk. I've only got enough for my prepaid regulars." But, as Pa said, never let the chance for a deal pass, even if it is bloody freezing out. "I've got some extra bottles, though, if you want milk."

Well, I don’t have an angry milkmaid on my hands, at least, though she still looks unhappy at the cold. Looks like there’s not going to be cheese, either, at least not today. “Winter’s a good time to dry out cows. Although, if you do any kind of good, soft white cheese, I might be persuaded to become one of those prepaid regulars.” That’s probably how she makes most of her money, same as me, and it would be nice to have cheese to put on bread in the mornings. Well, afternoons, knowing me ( ... )
