All I hear is your heart

Sunday, January 10th, mid-morningI put my umbrella in the stand by the door and then I go up the stairs, shaking the rain off me. It was a damp walk to church this morning. I've never liked January - it's always such a grey month, and this has been a grey sort of week for my mood, with Vale's wake on Monday. And then there was the business with ( Read more... )

"I'm back!"

I yawn and slip out 'a bed, slippin' into a robe. My hair's still braided fer sleepin' but there's bits flyin' out, and I catch a glimpse 'a myself in the mirror as I go t'greet Kate. My eyes ain't so shadowed and my skin ain't so pale now after a few days 'a rest.

"Mornin'," I say as I pad 'cross the floor t'her, leanin' in and brushin' my lips over Kate's. "How was church?"

I've bin thinkin' 'a what happened. I still ain't sorry 'bout my questions, but it weren't too good as a guest and so I'd asked Johnny t'take a note t'the Carnival fer Nu, thankin' her. There's no sense in keepin' enemies, though I still ain't sure what I'm goin' t'say t'Syl. I push it aside.

"The doctor said I can take the stitches out next week, right?" My arm itches real bad, and Kate's taken t'admonishin' me not t'scratch at it.

I smile as Tess comes out of the bedroom, her face slightly puffy with sleep and her hair messy. She kisses me, and I touch her cheek.

"How was church?"

"It was nice," I say. "Would you like some coffee?" I fill the pot and put it on the stove.

"The doctor said I can take the stitches out next week, right?"

"Yes," I say, "so don't fuss with it." I give her a warning look, and then I smile. "Did you want me to wash your hair today?" She shouldn't really get her wrist wet. "If you sit by the fire it should dry, I think." I take some bread and honey out of the cupboard in case Tess is hungry. "How are you feeling today?"

Kate touches her hand t'my cheek. "It was nice," she tells me, and I follow as she turns and walks t'the kitchen. "Would you like some coffee?" I nod 'n catch myself, 'cause her back's turned. "Yeah, thanks. I think I'm finally startin' t'feel warm now."

She turns after puttin' the water on t'boil. "Yes, so don't fuss with it," she orders with a mock glare. "Did you want me to wash your hair today? If you sit by the fire it should dry, I think."

I smile and walk over to where Kate's taken down some bread and honey, and cut a small slice, spreadin' it with the honey. "'F you dunt mind, yeah. I think it's due fer a wash." I smile at her. "You'll sit with me by the fire?"

"How are you feeling today?"I swallow down the bread, the honey sharp on my tongue with its sweetness. "Better," I tell her. "It helps havin' such a good nurse t'bring me back t'health." I snort 'n shake my head. "I think this is the second time you've taken care 'a me after I went too far castin' and got hurt by It. I expect you'll be well practiced ( ... )

"You'll sit with me by the fire?"

"Of course," I say, touching her on the shoulder as she spreads honey on her bread. "What better way to spend a rainy Sunday?" I smile at her.

"It helps havin' such a good nurse t'bring me back t'health. I think this is the second time you've taken care 'a me after I went too far castin' and got hurt by It. I expect you'll be well practiced soon," says Tess, trying to laugh. I sit down opposite her.

"I hope I won't get too used to it, though I'm happy to do it," I say quietly. "I worry about you, doing these things by yourself. I'm not saying you should stop, but maybe you should work with someone. Hermia knows a lot about magic," I say, "and there's Syl, I suppose," I add, a bit more reluctantly, though I have to admit I think Tess would be more likely to work well with Syl than Hermia. Tess and Hermia seemed to get along alright, but Hermia is much more bookish than Tess, and I'm not sure how well they would rub along together.
