the sky is a vanishing place

Wednesday Morning, on the road somewhere south (or north) of ExcoloFinished up my shift kinda late, cause sometimes it's nice givin' the kids time at the top to make out. Yeah, well, gives me time to have a smoke too, not like I'm freezin' my ass off for the purposes of romance alone. The lot's dark when I get back to my tent, smellin' of oil ( Read more... )

Gotta like the cafe. I stopped in a few times in the past, but I never felt wholly comfortable here before, less I was with Kate. Too many people lookin' at me ( ... )

Get used to folks giving you looks on the road - bein' a carnie's not much different, only usually, after a week or so, less most likely, you've moved on so it don't much matter how they looked at you back in the last town. Shit, let 'em look, not like it ruins my day. More to fuckin' life than frettin' about that shit. Kinda nice gettin' a nod though, now that's sweet. "Mornin'," I say, noddin' back. Looks like maybe she's not from here too.

Not exactly crowded, but I figure company might be nice, so I slide into a chair at the next table along from hers - not gonna bother me if she's chatty, not gonna bother me if she's not. Order myself a stack of pancakes first though - hungry enough to half the jars in the sideshow. "Had a hell of a night, I don't mind tellin' you." I say, spooning sugar into my coffee, when the waitress has disappeared out back again.

He sits near me and starts ladlin' sugar into his coffee. "Had a hell of a night, I don't mind tellin' you." He looks like it, though I ain't gonna say it.

The waitress shows up with his pancakes - always so damn fast here - an he starts right in like he starvin'. "Hungry, too," I observe. Pancakes smell good. Look him over a bit more: "You with the carnival, son?"

Lady seems kinda nice. Gettin' to know the old folks here if nothin' else. Only seems like a minute or so till my breakfast comes out, and I dig right in, only stoppin' for coffee. Fuck me, how much suger'd I put in here? Gotta pay attention to this stuff, heh. "Starvin'" I agree. Food here's pretty good too, but I just shovel it on down, too hungry for much else. "You with the carnival, son?"

Finished off about a quarter already, so I sit back to answer. "Yep. Kinda new to that whole game though. Know where I've been tonight?" Raise my eyebrows, then grin. "Cause I fuckin' don't. Weird town you got here," I say, like it's a joke almost. "Roads changin' direction, all fuckin' sorts."
