It was not far into the hills I fled before I shifted back to Boku's form. With a careful wrench I reset my nose, stumbling a bit at the refreshed pain. With that resolved, I shift once more into Ojiisan and slowly walk back to town. It was not quite fair to Luke to run once more. Not fair to leave him with Cimarron to usher home as well. Yet the world is not fair. He has made his choice and chosen the war god. Thought that friendship would be enough. It was demonstrated quite clearly with my actions that it is not what I want. And I, I need to focus on my other responsibilities. He clearly does not need me in his life for happiness, while I have others that need my protection. Enough of this foolishness, monster.
As soon as I am in town I make my way outside the schoolhouse and see that classes have been canceled. Swinging by Fiona's house and she is not there. Her father will keep her safe as he can, so I retreat to my room and focus on reports until my eyes falter and I finally sleep.
When I wake I find I have slept deeply as it is quite late in the morning. Neko-chan is the form that walks out the library door after carefully skirting Hermia. This time when I show up at Fiona's her father is there when I knock on the door. He looks suspicious when I ask if Fiona might accompany me to bring Miss Kaeli a get-well present. He asks me to wait, closes the door, and I hear furious whispering that even my ears cannot make out. But soon the door swings open and I am bowled over with one of Fiona's hugs while her father calls admonishments to be careful down the street.
Skipping down the street, hand in hand, I ask Fiona "Where would you like to go to get Miss Kaeli's present? Or do you want to see her first?" We have walked so quickly, we are already outside the front door of the schoolhouse.
