A striking quotation

When I was at the newly discovered Amazing Bookstore of English Language Wonder in Kyoto on Saturday, I (surprise) ended up in the political section. There, after perusing some Paul Krugman books, I found a book of the greatest American speeches of the 20th century. I opened it up, thinking that they had to have a certain speech that has struck ( Read more... )

Okay, so I read the speech and am very impressed. XD I like this guy! Sounds like he managed to be optimistic while still facing reality--which is awesome. Thank you for sharing.

Now I will share one of my favorite (from a fictional character) quotes:

"But if you don't try you'll never reach your goal. Saying 'it's too far' and not setting out means you'll never reach your destination."

Very loosely translated from the Japanese, but I'm sure you get the idea. I dunno how much it relates to what Mr. Kennedy was saying, but I like it.^^;;;

Oh man. You wanna talk about optimistic while still facing reality -- that's where he shines. I mean, he did all this after his brother had been shot. I can flip right to a quote in the book I just finished on that note -- an interviewer had just pressed him to say whether he was an optimist or not, and to quote from the book:

Kennedy nodded and smiled his weary-eyed smile. "Just because you can't live any other way, can you?"

It had just said that he believed in America but "refused to give in to what it was becoming."

Yeah. He was pretty cool.

And I do like your quote! Funny you should mention that now, 'cause that sounds just like something from a speech at the DNC last week about how JFK didn't say "it's too far" about going to the Moon. Hah. More synchronicity. Thanks for sharing! :)

i spent a while trying to think of things to say about the quote, but anything i say won't do it justice. that said, quotes just don't get much better than that.

Oh dude.

You should write that quote somewhere in your book. Like an introductory page or something like that.

I love synchronicity. Thanks for sharing this. :)

Oh, and I will -- it'll probably be the epigraph at the beginning of the second novel. (It fits the second even better than the first, at least going by what I think the second will be. She lives up to the quote as a more mature sort of person in the second book. ;)
