Virginia GOP registration drive worker found throwing away voter registration formsSo all these state Republican administrations are so worried about in-person voter fraud (a problem that doesn't exist, by the way) they're enacting strict ID legislation, yet don't seem overly concerned about voter registation drives (except, of course, if it ( Read more... )

I have to say, one of my proudest moments YET THE HARDEST was when a couple approached me at an election. They could barely speak enough English to communicate but they made it absolutely clear to me that they were there to vote AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE. They needed to know exactly where on the ballot to vote for that. NO GAYS! NO GAY MARRIAGE! They did not give a shit about any other thing. Just that.

Now, as an official election worker I am not allowed to tell people what box to check, and I could have probably used that excuse to not help them. BUT I had a situation here where people would not be able to have their vote properly cast and counted without me doing essentially that. So I fucking helped those two old fogeys cast a vote I found personally abhorrent. GOD DAMN IT.

But you know, America, and goddamnit if you support people's right to vote, you SUPPORT PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO VOTE.

Bingo, and I'd also be so, so conflicted in that situation (but of course would have done what you did). You can't suppress anyone's vote, but this only seems to be a concept the radical right isn't understanding lately.

My father was a good guy, and although he claimed he didn't vote the party but only voted for the person, the person always turned out to be Republican. When I turned 18 I started going with him to vote because, as I told him, "Someone has to cancel out your vote!" He always laughed at me, but never tried to discourage me in any way. (Now if I could only convince my mother to stop voting for Dancing With The Stars and vote in the real elections - it's even at her library which she goes to like 3 times a week!)

Wow. I very recently got an update status from one of my LJ friends that her registration had been unfairly denied, and now this.

I've never seen anything like this in my lifetime, at least not in America. The Repubs know that they are losing the long-term demographics battle, so they are resorting to cheating to try to get RMoney into the White House.

God be with this nation if he does get in. It's not Romney per se that scares me. It's his throne of minions that will follow.

And it's how he'd get in there in the first place. The fact that it's neck and neck right now is both surprising and scary to me. Also heard on NPR this morning about how this could be the reverse of 2000 - the GOP gets the popular vote, but the Dems win in the electoral college.
