Their momma didn't teach them very well! Or they just didn't pick it up. You're probably right when you say that the gene pool will be better off without them. :\ Enjoy your venison! I haven't had any for years and miss it a bit.
Not dumb deer. Possibly deaf deer. And if they were that young, they may or may not have adapted beyond their fawn instinct to stay still. Does often leave their young sitting still, even in strange open places, while they go out to get food. The fawn will stay completely still until the mother returns, even for hours.
They aren't that young. They would have been born last spring, and early. They don't have the spots anymore. These two were officially on their own- too large to hang out with their mother. They've been weaned, and this is mating season when their mom will get pregnant again (and knowing her, it will be twins).
Anyway, mom gardens- she wants less deer around so they don't eat her baby nut trees. We're a bit over-populated, due to this one doe having twins nearly every year.
I approve of hunting for food, and this is for food. Any meat that will not fit in our freezer will be donated to the local soup kitchen where my mom volunteers.
