Late Bus to Hollywood

I just saw a bunch of films I missed seeing in theaters, because I'm poor:

G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra - The first two thirds are everything I could ever want from an action film based on a cartoon based on a series of plastic toys. Once I swallowed the notion that I was watching a fantasy with a ridiculously thin "military" veneer, it was ( Read more... )

I have not seen GI Joe as I heard it was complete shit.

I thought the look of 9 was just gorgeous. The "post war" look of desolation and destruction was so complex and fully realized that it took my breath away. The story was good, but I felt it was too thin and predictable in places and I really wish there had been time to explore the world and these characters in greater depth and detail. This world needs to have been a series of films rather then just one.

I also quite enjoyed District 9 and I completely agree with you that I felt like the audience was being treated in an adults manner. It does flip into "action movie" mode in a couple of places, but I felt like it did so rather consciously.

It's obvious District 9 wasn't a hollywood film. And it was obvious in all the right ways.

I enjoyed District 9 quite a bit, but it's funny how a few years difference can change a movie for someone, too. My wife being about 5 years younger than me didn't really know a lot about apartheid beyond the basic segregation motif so digested the movie differently than me.

There were a few reviews that were critical that the movie did turn into more of a shoot-'em-up ending, but I don't entirely agree with that.

I think one of the more shocking parts of the movie is finding out that the filming location for most of District 9 was an actual area of slums in Johannesburg.

Plus, it had giant robotic armour. Honestly, how can that be bad?
