Okay, I need people to start shutting the hell up about Dakota Fanning's new movie Hounddog:

1. Dakota Fanning (DF) knew what she was getting herself into when she signed on to star in this film. She didn't read a script about horsies and puppies and flowery goodness, and then get blindsided by the rape scene.

2. DF was not sold into slavery/a ( Read more... )

Is this really a big deal? Between this and the angst I've heard from others regarding political polls for they who would be President, I'm really glad to not have television.

Point people who personally bother you to this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117913/ and tell them to rent the movie. Seriously. The rape scene in it freaked me out. Couple that with the summation at the end of the father's trial and it was a true powerhouse of a movie. Maybe no one cared about this child actor because she was black? Start a whole protest about how you feel this young lady who acted in a false rape scene 11 years ago was totally not considered as being abused because she is a racial minority and how the Christian Right and their weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth is only coming about because the actress is a pretty white girl with blonde hair.

Okay, yes, we were talking about this earlier in class. There have been plenty of movies involving rape and abuse and prostitution of children, and all of a sudden it's a big deal.

I don't know, it just bothers me that (from what I've heard) Fanning is incredible in this movie, and the writing is fantastic and all that, but she and the movie are getting negative attention.

It does seem a bit odd to have any kind of outrage at this point, I mean you could go back farther to "Shame" in 1987 and that was gang rape. Then there was the documentary done on the prevalence of child prostitution in Brazil and an expose on it in Thailand - all within the past three to four years. And what of the huge debale and documentary done on the child prostitution in Boys Town in the late 1980s ( ... )

I heard about the outrage, but I have no idea who DF is or what the movie is about (aside from the fact there's a rape scene or something). I agree with your points, though. As much as some movies might squick me because of their content, I would never stop someone else from seeing it or making it. If you don't want to go see something, then don't. But don't try and stop others from seeing it. That's censorship, pure and simple. :|
