Summary: During the whole enlistment arc in Luke and Noah's story is when I realized that the writers of ATWT are on crack. I kept thinking that I could have done so much better with the story. So I thought about it and 30 pages of outline later, I started writing. This is the result.

The story starts after this point in the Luke and Noah storyline
:

Prologue.

Luke beats on the windows of the van with his fists, “Noah! Don’t do this! Don’t go!” He can see Noah sitting there, looking at him. He lays his hand on the glass, pleading. “I love you.” Noah turns away from him and faces forward as the van pulls away.

Standing there on the curb,  Luke watches his heart being driven away with Noah. He can feel the adrenaline still coursing through him, his hands shaking as Luke balls them into fists. He keeps watching as the van merges into the sea of metal and feels something deep inside of him crack wide open and then shatter into a million pieces.

He doesn’t  remember walking the long blocks to his car, doesn’t remember driving through the Chicago traffic, getting onto the interstate or even pulling off at a rest stop. All he can think of is the empty feeling in his chest. He feels so cold and empty that, even though it’s a scorching July day, he’s shivering as he sits staring at the steering wheel. He’s heard about people being in shock and thinks that maybe that’s what this is. Either that, or he really is still standing on a sidewalk in Chicago, surrounded by the pieces of what was left of him.

Reaching for the ignition, he turns the car off, pocketing the keys and getting out of the car. Walking across the parking lot to the deserted picnic area beyond it, Luke’s mind is spinning out of control.

Luke starts pacing as his mind replays everything over and over. ‘The worst part of it,’ Luke thinks, ‘is when he looked right at me as I begged him to not do it,  He looked right at me as I told him I loved him, then he turned away and let them leave without saying a goddamn word!’

Moment after moment speeds through his mind as he searches for what he did wrong, what he didn’t do, that brought him to this moment. But instead, Luke finds a path of memories laid out in front of him that leads  him to a far different place. Once all the pieces have snapped together, Luke feels the bottom fall out of his world as he sinks down on a bench.

“Oh my god.”
