In which I analyze the Iron Major. (Sort of. I think. I mainly just want to hug him.)

This is the result of last night's rewatch of I Am The Enemy. For the unititiated, that's an episode of a '60s World War II show called Twelve O'Clock High which (episode, not show) starred William Shatner as the aforementioned Iron Major. It's a pretty good episode and also pretty damn heartwrenching (particularly for me, for various reasons).

I'm ( Read more... )

This is brilliant! There are some shows and other things I'd love to analyze myself, but I've never thought I was able to do it. You did a great job, and totally spot on!
Yes, the fear, horrible, mind-blurring fear was evident, but again, to those who can read Shatner (which anyway shouldn't be difficult, seeing how perfect he is). Poor boy. I recall this being one of those I liked most, and I really like and approve the way you examined it. I'd add the whole talk of loneliness between him and the lady to my all time favs, because I'm a sappy freak and loved it as hell and because it reminded me so painfully of Jim.

'Not that Jim is not a thorough mess in his own way - just not as obvious and therefore not as fixable a mess'. The first part of this, I thought myself before reading it; the second one, it broke my heart. So true! Aww, Jim, stay out of our worries, will you?
Also, Arena. I know it's commonly known as 'the ep where Jim freaks out, then builds a cannon out of nothing', but really, he had a reason at the time, and duty, ( ... )

Thank you! <3 I couldn't not say it, you know? Something made me spill it all.
I...don't...know. He's certainly easy for us to read, but there are people on the planet (and a majority of them too!) who've watched ALL of TOS and the films and still think he's a bad actor, so I'm not sure how easy it is for people such as that. It should be, though - I mean look into his eyes, goddamnit; they say bloody everything. :/ Oh man, I know, that was gorgeous and heartrending (but I think there are other universal languages, and one of them is passion. :D) Which ones have you seen, because I have a suspicion I've seen far fewer than you have! (Also I missed downloading a few before Megaupload was taken down. :( )

I knowwww. I identify with Jim to a ridiculous degree, so this is pretty much the story of my life, actually (people not realizing I'm hurting when I am and therefore being able to do nothing to help). Oh, Jim. *snuggles the cap'n*
Oh, I agree he had a reason, but he just took that ruthless pursuit a little beyond what his usual ( ... )

I know! There are many shows one really can't not say something about, so there would really need to be a lot more of these analyses, TOS being a shining example.
Exactly. They say everything, along with his voice, when he (Jim or Kurt or whoever) lets it. Nothing could replace those minuscule variations, and that's why I refuse the dubbing, regardless of how good it is. I still believe most are too envying to admit how good he really is, or they simply get so swamped in the stereotypes that they forget what has been right before their eyes and maybe even acknowledged. (Of course there are. I for one, at cost of appearing mushy, think of love and friendship. ;)) I did see quite a bit at the time, as Cold hands, warm heart, Stranger in the mirror - which are two of my favs as well - Virginian - The claim, The intruder (oh mamma mia!!), Portrait of a painter, Smack, Arrest and Trial, some other I'll have to look up. ;)

Understood. And aren't most of us subtleness loving made that way (except that Jim denies even when other people do ( ... )
