OMG! Yes, I am sad about this (I was really hoping he'd stay for one more series beyond the upcoming four-specials-only year) but he had one of the longer runs as the Doctor, actually.
And the idea of his career tanking because he left Doctor Who is just ridiculous. He already had a successful career long before he was the Doctor. (And having just seen him in Stratford I have total confidence in his continued success as a performer!)
I was hoping he'd stay a bit longer too. If only to ease the transition to Steven Moffat, which could be a very different style of Who.
His career tanking is a stupid notion. It's just a fan striking out randomly because they feel personally hurt by him. Which is crazy, but understandable in a way. It didn't look as if it was a decision he made easily. I guess it was probably a choice between options only a fool would turn down and a childhood dream. He's already fulfilled the dream, so time to move on upwards. :)
