The subject of retconing has come up around the place and I love to swing myself up onto the odd passing bandwagon. *grin ( Read more... )

Hm, I don't know.
For me, precisely something is a retcon if it contradicts too much of the canon to be believeable, or if it's to badly done for that.

Like a few comics characters who died and were "resurrected", or found out not dead, much later, once a new writer had come up. Or if the readers complained too much.

Or if it was known or obvious that a writer wrote a certain angle deliberately, and either he or someone else changes their mind because it's convenient for the plot. Most of times, it's the obviousness of the "change of heart" that makes me roll my eyes.

In the case of Spike, well, JM always played him more "soulful" than he ought to have been so FFL didn't come out TOO out of character after all.
But the soul thing, on the other hand?

My issue with it is that they gave so many red-herrings that it was not the soul he was looking for, that JM played it that way. The lines could be understood both ways (and still, they weren't that good at that), but the way it was filmed and acted was only heading in one direction.
