Nice that he'll might let gay couples have civil unions. Even if he does feel "threatened" if a man was attracted to him.

That particular remark is covered in some depth.

That Tony is not where I might like him to be in this issue, he is still a world away from what was standard conservative (let alone conservative Catholic) fare not that many years ago.

It is, but even as a conservative Catholic, he should be able to differentiate his own opinions (and even feelings) from what should be law, and he should be forthright about it.

At the moment he's hedging his bets, not being opposed to federal antidiscimination laws "in principle". Well, I'd like to see what those principles actually are.

Not if it takes him too far ahead of his Party and his allies (he is in Coalition with the Nationals, after all).

As for hedging his bets, he is not going to write the Government a legislative blank cheque in advance: no Opposition Leader of any sense would on any issue with any political bite to it.
