I thought the comments by Simon Fanshawe (about gay clubbing lifestyle etc.) were interesting, but not really new. He is essentially making the same observations as gay commenters did years ago, in particular Larry Kramer in the 70s, and, to a lesser extent, Randy Shilts in the 80s.

They're sentiments I've heard from most of my gay friends and indeed on JOY FM quite a fair bit as well. The "scene" seems to represent an ever-decreasing proportion of gay men, yet it remains as prominent as ever.

Fair point. Of course, it seems more striking to people who are not aware of the longer history.
