I was very saddened by those results as well, but think on this. Thirty years ago those propositions wouldn't have even been thought of because the very idea of same-sex marriage could not have been conceived of by mainstream America.

I think these propositions represented the only things that the evangelical christian right got their voters out for in this election and I think mainstream America will strike them down in the next few years.

These propositions are actually unconstitutional for starters and a strictly constructionist Supreme Court would have to agree.

It is true that things have come along way in 30 years. And 48% of Californian voters voted for same-sex marriage. But it was still not a good night.

As for unconstitutional, reasonable folk can reasonably agree on that. And since much of the drive behind the bands was precisely about reigning in allegedly overweening judges, not sure the judges would be willing to go there.

I've posted on this topic at my blog here:
http://insomnimusing.blogspot.com/2008/11/as-promised-my-rant-against-gay.html
It's titled, "My rant against the gay marriage bans." It is a point-by-point counterpoint to all the standard arguments against gay marriage. Any comment you might have is appreciated. Thank you.
