If you like history (or even if you don't) I highly recommend you read (if you haven't already) Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything You American History Textbook Got Wrong. It's a real eye opener. There's also Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong. Both by by James W. Loewen. I'm currantly reading the first, and will be reading the latter after I finish. It's just taking me a while to get through it. Being a big fan of history I find myself underlining, highlighting and making notes. Right now I'm on chapter 5; Gone With the Wind, Invisibility of Racisism in America.
I also recommend Lovely Bones, Ishmael and basically all the classics (my favs: Tale of Two Cities, 1984, The Giver, Brave New World, Diary of Anne Frank, Canterbury Tales). I'm also a firm believer that anyone who loves literature needs to have two books: one with a collection of Shakespeare's sonnets and another with his best plays. I'm picky about my books, I may be a Puff but I'm a bit of a book/plot/literature snob. shhh.
